Crook Town AFC vs Brandon United

Sending off changes game

Crook Town continued their unbeaten run with a 1-1 draw at home to Brandon United. Crook Town Manager Colin Myers was forced to make changes to the side that beat Willington due to suspensions. That included Callum Smith, Wayne Whitfield and Connor Hughes. Joe Spooner and Joe Grant were unavailable due to work commitments and Paul Sammons is still injured.

Both teams started of very cagey but it was Crook who had the first chance when Sonny Andrews forced the keeper in to a good save. Crook now gained the upper hand and created a number of half chances with Nathan Plews a constant torn in the side of Brandons defence.

The second half started off much the same as the first with Crook gaining the upper hand and looking the most likely to score and they did exactly that on 65 minutes as a cross inΒ to the box was met by the head of Peter Brown who planted it straight in to the top corner of the Brandon goal.

With Crook well in control of the game it looked as though they were about to register another 3 points when the turning point of the game occurred. With ten minutes left on the clock, Ryan Cummings, who had been booked just 5 minutes before, inexplicably stepped across the ball whilst Brandon attempted to take a free kick and was immediately booked and sent off. This gave Brandon renewed hope and they began to launch a series of long balls in to the Crook box. This paid off five minutes later when Crook defender Thomas Iley tripped a Brandon forward in the box and the referee had no option but to point to the spot. However, Niall Harrison pulled off a great save to keep Crook in front. Crook were now on the back foot but then came two chances that should of won the game. firstly, Sonny Andrews was put clear in the box and just as he was about to shoot heΒ was seemingly tripped by a Brandon defender but no penalty was given. Then the chance of the game. Damon Reaks was put through one on one with the keeper and instead of slotting the ball in to the corner he decided to go around the keeper who made the save.

Brandon then literally went up the other end and scored what proved to be the equaliser. A long ball in to the Crook box was head clear by Maddison but Brandons Phillipson sent in a volley from the edge of the box which was expertly pushed on to the cross bar by Harrison but Todd the Brandon centre forward was first to react and headed in the rebound.

Brandon then had a player sent off for a second yellow and the game ended shortly after.

After the game Crook Manager, Colin Myers commented “That was two points dropped today in a game in which we should have won comfortably. What Ryan Cummings was thinking about for his second yellow I just don’t know. That changed the game and gave Brandon the upper hand. We should have killed the game off with the chance Damo had late on but overall I was pleased with the performance”
